Driving Mining and Energy Innovation: RESPEC Welcomes GRG and EARTHRES

Jay Nopola Senior Vice President, Mining & Energy
As we move into a new year, we take an energized look back at some of the significant milestones that have poised RESPEC’s M&E team for an exciting 2025 and beyond. Early in 2024, we expanded our geochemistry and microbiology services by acquiring Enviromin . In the second half of last year, we brought two more incredible companies into the RESPEC family: Geothermal Resources Group (GRG) and EARTHRES. These partnerships are about growth and delivering even greater value to our clients in energy, mining, and environmental projects.
With over 30 years of expertise across 18 countries, GRG has become a leader in geothermal exploration and drilling management. One standout achievement was the swift drilling of two wells in the Salton Sea to an equivalent depth of 6,000 feet—less than half the time required by traditional methods. This kind of innovation cuts costs and makes geothermal projects far more competitive.
Dr. Matt Minnick, who leads our Geothermal Energy Group, explained that this partnership is more than just adding services. He described it as a way to “offer full-service geothermal solutions that truly accelerate innovation,” emphasizing how this collaboration helps support the shift to renewable energy. GRG drilling proficiency also provides new opportunities in other markets we serve.
EARTHRES, which joined RESPEC in October 2024, is known for stellar mining, energy, environmental, and solid waste consulting work. Their work strengthens our footprint in the Appalachian and Northeast regions. Their specialized services, such as Acid Mine Drainage treatment and processing plant design, also enrich our lifecycle offerings.
In speaking with Jan Hutwelker, EARTHRES’ President and CEO, he mentioned how this partnership clearly makes sense. He sees it as an opportunity for both teams to deepen their knowledge and create more value for clients. “It’s not just about combining resources—it’s about creating new opportunities for our clients and teams,” Jan stated.
Gaining GRG and EARTHRES is a perfect example of what RESPEC does best: building a team greater than the sum of its parts. These partnerships strengthen our capabilities and create tangible benefits for our clients and communities.
