SUPPORT FOR UNDERGROUND INFRASTRUCTURE
Brett Belzer, Supervisor
RESPEC has a rich history in the mining industry, specializing in underground rock mechanics, particularly salt rock.
RESPEC engineers have developed deep knowledge about the behavior of salt and how creep and damage processes will occur under a wide range of stress and temperature. RESPEC‘s engineers have also worked on several projects involving designing and analyzing infrastructure in underground workings in diverse geologic conditions, from soft ground to hard rock.
As aging mining assets become a concern, RESPEC focuses on extending the life of operational assets, including shafts and other underground infrastructure, while minimizing construction costs and downtime. Constructing underground bulkheads to effectively seal and isolate water inflows has also become critical to some operations, requiring careful prioritizing and planning for such activities.
Routine ground-control maintenance, often difficult and resource-intensive, is important to prevent disruptions in daily operations, especially from issues related to the stability of the drift back, pillar ribs, surrounding shafts, ramps, and storage bins. RESPEC’s geomechanical studies assess storage bins and ramp systems geometry to determine how these geometries may impact the host rock’s long-term stability and overall response. RESPEC routinely uses numerical modeling methods to quantify deformation and damage to the surrounding rock to guide ground support, design infrastructure, and help determine mining and operational decisions.
RESPEC provides on-site support during construction or routine inspections of critical mine infrastructure and can also help operations save money and prioritize rehabilitation activities. Visual observations and measurements inform structural stability and integrity. Findings, compared to previous inspections and historical data to identify differences, guide actions to maintain long-term stability, and address hazards that may pose a risk to on-site personnel or impact operations.
The RESPEC team comprises subject matter experts in hydrogeology, geology, rock mechanics, underground structural engineering, and shaft inspections. RESPEC’s worldwide rock mechanics expertise provides our team with unsurpassed knowledge of hydrogeologic systems, the behavior of rock, rock-structure interaction, and interpreting datasets to support mining project solutions. Whether it is new underground infrastructure or rehabilitation of existing infrastructure, RESPEC can offer solutions to a variety of unique challenges.
